professional bio
J. Carlos Fox started in Workers’ Compensation as a claims adjuster, then as a paralegal. Thereafter, with an eye towards aggressively representing clients, he became a Workers' Compensation Attorney, having now practiced in that arena for nearly two decades. Carlos has represented carriers, employers, TPAs and Applicants. Having discovered his preference for the defense, he finds that his efforts as an attorney on both sides have helped him develop strong, effective relationships with Applicant's Attorneys, EDD, and lien claimants. Similarly, knowing how the parties tend to develop their strategies, he is particularly well-suited to negotiate with co-defendants.
Carlos is fluent in Spanish, which provides him yet another way to defend a case, such as when there is concern that a translator’s translations are inexact. It also gives him a great deal of insight into how best to approach claims of monolingual injured workers.
Carlos also has ten years of experience in civil litigation in both State and Federal Courts, primarily in Real Estate law, Corporate law, Transactional, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Trademark law. This experience has fostered an attention to detail which is useful in analyzing aspects of claims including apportionment, subrogation, commutations, and life-pension.
Carlos is the past President of the Chula Vista Historic Museum Board, and the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Chula Vista Library. In 2001 Carlos and other like-minded residents were instrumental in the passage of the Mills Act in Chula Vista to protect historic structures by providing incentives to preservation. Carlos and his family live in a historic home built in 1921 which they have faithfully restored, resulting in Carlos and his wife, Lucy, being awarded “Historical Preservationists of the Year” in 2003.
Mr. Fox was born and raised in San Diego, California. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Insurance in 1981 from San Diego State University. He earned his Juris Doctorate in 1988 from Western State University College of Law in San Diego.
Carlos has been married since 1997 and he and his wife have three boys and one girl. In his spare time Carlos enjoys travel, and works on further restoration and maintenance of his historic home, plays competitive Backgammon, and tinkers with his 1968 Corvette Convertible he restored during the pandemic.
