Mr. Butler began his career in criminal law as a Deputy Public Defender in Seattle, Washington. He served for ten years as Chief Counsel of the Bayview Hunters Point Community Defender, a 501(c)(3) neighborhood criminal defense firm in San Francisco, which was funded by a grant from the Mayor’s Office of Community Development.
Angelo has also worked as a legislative counsel for the California State Assembly Committee on Public Safety in Sacramento, whose primary jurisdiction is the Penal Code and Evidence Code, where he analyzed bills propounded by members of the Assembly and the Senate, and advised Committee members during public hearings at the State Capitol.
Mr. Butler was an associate attorney at law firms engaged in asbestos and tobacco litigation in San Francisco, representing plaintiffs suffering from related pulmonary disease and malignancies.
Mr. Butler’s outside interests over the years has involved social justice issues. As part of his duties with the ACLU, for example, he served on the Legal Committee engaged in impact litigation. The also represented a woman from Cameron because of her political activities, was twice been arrested and tortured while imprisoned.
